How Interesting Wing Chairs Can Make Your Living Space Fly!

Historically, wing chairs served a practical purpose: to protect the head from drafts and keep in the heat in the colonial wintertime. Nowadays, they are the perfect traditional addition to living room design

interesting wing chairs

Image: Modern2designers.com

Wing chairs or wing back chairs are upholstered chairs with high backs, “wings” (hence their name), arm rests, and many have exposed wooden legs. Although the definition of a wing chair has become much more broad. They come in a variety of types: all kinds of different wing shapes, sizes, and styles.

A few interesting wing chairs are shown. They accent family room design or living room design nicely. They may even serve as an elegant touch to a bedroom.

5 Questions to Ask to Choose the Best Kitchen Faucet Design

When choosing a kitchen design, kitchen faucet design may seem like an afterthought. But depending on the functions of the sink, this can change the type of faucet you choose. Here’s a guide to choosing a functional kitchen faucet:

What Kitchen Faucet Finish should you choose?

Depending on what you think is more important for your particular kitchen, scratches or ease of cleaning, this should dictate the finish you choose.

Delta Chrome Kitchen Faucet

Image: deltafaucet.com

A chrome finished kitchen faucet holds up best to a variety of household cleaners. If you plan to use tough cleaners on your kitchen faucet this is probably the best finish to choose.

brushed nickel kitchen faucetImage: lightinthebox.com

A brushed finished kitchen faucet, on the other hand, doesn’t scratch as easily (abclocal.go.com).  The brushed finish can come in a variety of colors, above is brushed nickel finish.

How many handles will your sink have?

This is of particular concern if you’re doing a kitchen redesign. How many holes do you have to fill in your existing countertop? You can opt for the standard two handle controlled sink, but here are some other options to consider:

single handle kitchen faucetImage: metro-focus.com

A one handle kitchen faucet is popular, but this can be hard to use. Also, if you have a backsplash, you want to be sure the handle won’t interfere with the backsplash.

High tech Aquabrass kitchen faucet

Image: luxurylaunches.com

Another option is the newest technology kitchen faucet, with no handles. This faucet has digital temperature controls.

Delta touch technology kitchen sink

Image: Deltafaucet.com

Another new technology is a no-hassle faucet ideal for the frequent cook and baker. No need to dirty your kitchen faucet with the easy touch technology design. It is important to note these faucets can be a little on the expensive side, howerever.

Where is the kitchen faucet?

This question can answer many of the quesitons above, if you keep in mind what the sink is used for this can help determine the type of faucet you want. Fixture design can vary drastically depending on the location of the sink: indoor kitchen faucet design will differ a lot from outdoor kitchen faucet design. Also a bar kitchen faucet should have much different functional demands compared to the kitchen faucet in your main kitchen. Don’t spend mega bucks on the bar sink!

How often do you use the faucet and what do you use it for?

How often you use the will determine how hardy you need the kitchen faucet to be. What you use it for will determine how much swing you need. Swing is how far the faucet goes around, a faucet can be anywhere from limited stationary swing to a full unlimited swing (abclocal.go.com). How the sink functions will also determine if you need a faucet with shower capability or not. Are you washing dishes in the sink? If so, you should probably opt for the shower head capability faucet.

What price point should you choose?

If you’re on a budget not to worry! Consumer Reports says these days all but the cheapest faucets have better valves. Most manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty that covers leaks and stains” (consumerreports.org). Interior kitchen faucet design is pretty standard quality across the board so no need to feel like you need to spend an arm and a leg for a kitchen faucet!

Insider Finds from High Point Furniture Market

Twice a year High Point Furniture Market opens its showrooms to throngs of buyers, designers and architects from around the world to view the latest furnishings and accessories.  This week is one of the two weeks.  I spent the first weekend at the showrooms and there are some really wonderful new products and, as can be expected, some not so wonderful.  As a designer, sometimes you have to kiss a lot of furniture frogs before you can find a few princes.

Oomph Palm Beach Demi Lune Image: Oomphonline.com

Some new pieces I love are from Oomph.  They have the best lacquer tables that are available in 16 colors with 9 different table top materials.  They are also produced in the US (in Connecticut) and won’t break the bank!

Currey Newsprint Table Lamp

The High Point Furniture show is not just about furniture but also features accessories and lighting. Currey and Company Lighting was another winner for my trip. The lamp above is actually made from recycled newsprint. Nice to see a continued dedication by manufacturers to do right by the environment.

This fun, magenta chandelier needs just the right whimsical space, and it might not necessarily be where you expect. Don’t think this wouldn’t be amazing hanging as a pair over a kitchen dining island!

This is a fun storage trunk that would be terrific as a beach house storage piece and conversation starter.

Natural Light has a fabulous program for mixing and matching lamp bases, colors, shades, and finials.  They start with the base of which there are 12 style choices and then you choose from 35 colors.  It is a fabulous!

The High Point Furniture Market really does provide some great interior design inspiration and lots of exercise since there are 10 million sq. ft. of showroom spaces, 2000 exhibitors, and 180 buildings to work your way through.  Approximately 80,000 people attend each market!

As it’s only open to designers, architects, and retailers, I always make sure to attend each fall and spring so that our design firm is up to date and well-versed on what is out there to best suit each of our clients.

White Bathroom Interior Design

The most important aspect of a bathroom is that it is clean, and what color says clean better than white? We already talked about white being a great color for kitchens, but white is the perfect color for any bathroom design as well!

The Minimalist White bathroom

Minimalist White Bathroom

Image: ElleDecor.com

White is a logical color for this no-fuss design scheme. White is simple, straight forward, and neat. Just look at the clean-lined, minimalist bathroom above. The stright lines and simplicity of the design stand out when they’re complimented by the white walls and countertop. Even the rather simple bouquet of flowers adorning the top of the counter pops in the monochromatic simplicity. This design is very sharp and clean.

White Marble Bathroom

White Marble Bathroom

For a more elegant white bathroom, pair white with marble. The picture to the left shows an antique white bathroom. Paired with marble, white can fit into any traditional design. Tall cielings and small fixtures compliment the white and marble. This bathroom has an older feeling while still maintaining the clean aesthetic that compliments white!

Off White Bathroom

Romantic Off-White BathroomImage: Elledecor.com

A white bathroom doesn’t necessarily have to be stark white to have the same qualifiers. Take the off-white bathroom above. It is still clean and light, but the off-white color makes it a more warm and welcoming bathroom. The chandeliers and ethereal rug transform the white bathroom into a romantic, feminine bathroom.

The Space Opening Element of White

Bright, White Bathroom Image: www.decoratingroom.net

The magic of white is its property as a space multiplier. The picture to above is an example of white opening a space. White reflects light, so a bathroom with mirrors (and maybe windows) will instantly be opened up. Bathrooms can often be small too, so the light, open quality of white is particularly appealing. The bathroom above is all white: white walls, white cabinets, white floors, white fixtures, but even a majority white space will have a similar open effect.

Bright, Bold, Beautiful! 3 Ways to Color Your Living Room Design

It’s spring again and the new spring trend, from personal style to interior design, is color. Bright throw pillows, bold living room furniture, bright wall-coverings, and bold prints make up the spring 2012 interior design trend towards color!

Orange Living Room decorImage: VogueLiving.com

The hot living room color for this year is orange. Commonly paired with a cool blue, orange definitely makes a statement! Orange living room drapes look lovely in this living room.

But how do you incorporate this new trend into your classic living rooms?

bright living room design, blue

Balancing color

Bright colors should come with a warning label that reads: used sparingly! Bright colors easily overwhelm. Bright, printed accent pillows in lieu of a matching upholstered, printed arm chair along with a throw and ottoman a shade darker achieve the bright blue that characterizes this space. White couch and chair combined with navy walls make up the perfect backdrop for the splash of color from the accents! Offsetting the bold blue colors with white and navy anchors the space.

Accessories and accents

The bright colors of spring 2012 interior design trend may not always be in style. A great way to still incorporate color without having to redesign your living room every year is to invest in bright accents and accessories. The bright pillow accent pieces and ceramic accessories complement the space without costing an arm and a leg

Image: abodelove.blogspot.com

Bright living Room

Just like bright color, bright prints need to be balanced. The yellow printed wall-coverings and grey printed carpet are enough print for this room. The solid blue chair, solid grey couch, and solid yellow window treatments tone down the prints. Yellow and blue is a great complementary color combination.

What do you think of the color craze dominating design in 2012?
